Imagine… That gigantic house with a bedroom for everyone, several living spaces, large kitchen for entertaining, outdoor patio area and a backyard stitched with the lushest couch grass. This seems to be a true reflection of the great Australian dream. I tend to agree with that dream, my view is a little more grass and a little less house, but we’re all on that similar path.
But does owning a home truly make you happy? And how does it affect your well-being. This question for some it is more or less rhetorical in nature, it has been bred into us that purchasing a home to grow into as well as an investment is ‘the dream’ and in return gives happiness and profits… to some. Some are finding this question more and more difficult to answer as the stresses on mortgage repayments, household expenditure and the expenditure on life and fun itself is making that dream more of a struggle.
As people are given the opportunity for cheap money to start dipping their toes into the pool of debt and in turn the property market, they are doing so with the view that their property will always go up in value. This fact is true, this is true for everything. The hidden tax of inflation lurks in these waters and signs of it are ever increasing. From the $25 smashed avocado breakfast to the average $1900 a year electricity bill, this will always occur in our inflationary financial system we have today. Unfortunately, wages across the board don’t seem to be getting these percentage increases needed and it is starting to hurt some. Will this struggle as it goes through generation to generation slowly kill ‘the dream’ and maybe change the way we look at our life goals?
That being said, a home is the dream, a home is the place of adventures and growth, a home will be one of the, if not biggest investment you will make in your lifetime. But it will be the investment for your future. So before dipping your toe into the property market pool seek that advice, do your own research and search for professionals to help with that decision. But always remember that it’s only a home once you fill it with love, family and care. Before that it’s simply just bricks and mortar.
